Reflections Through a Young Girl's Heart

The boys at JB were absolutely wonderful and so were the French Fries and tartar sauce at Fisher's. Town and Country was the incredible place we went to at the end of our 7 hour school day. We needed those well done fries and the company of our friends to get fortified. It was there that we girls would discuss the events of the day; what boys we had passed in the hall, that someone special had said "Hi" to us, or maybe we had discovered someone new to have a crush on. We might give each other advice about how to "get" that special someone. We would also talk about who had gotten in trouble at school that day. Maybe a teacher had sent a girl to the office for wearing her hair too full, or her skirt too short. We weren't allowed to wear eye makeup but we cheated a little and hoped we wouldn't get caught. Could Mr. Allen really tell if some dark haired girl was wearing a touch of masquera that she so desperately needed? Was that white stuff we put on our lips technically lipstick? We were united in our passionate feelings about the injustice of it all.

xxxxSometimes after school, Carnation was the place to be. We consumed Chocolate Chip ice cream sodas while mingling with charming J.B.boys and listening to "Johnny Angel." We were sure these boys had been sent from heaven to make our young girl's hearts swoon.

xxxxWe also went to Thrifty's at the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax. There, cherry cokes and french fries or onion rings were the thing. For 25 cents we could ham it up in front of the camera in the picture booth out front and at the same time watch for signs of who else would be stopping by on their way home from school.

xxxxEven more special were kisses stolen in the tunnel of love that ran under 3rd Street at McCadden Place in front of Art Center. While waiting for the bus to take us home; some of us experienced the underground make-out. That was the ultimate! (Whew! Hot flash at this very moment!) On the weekends there  were so many places to go and have fun; Larchmont for Pop's Record Store, playing the latest 45s; Baskin Robbins, intellectual pursuits at Chevallier's Book Store and, of course, just watching the cute boys ride their bicycles up and down the street. There was ice skating at the Polar Palace, bowling at the Pan Pacific and talking, laughing and singing the current popular songs about young love as we walked to the Fairfax theater to watch a double feature that might have included "Creature From the Black Lagoon".

xxxxSo many perfect places to be with your fabulous friends and have the very best of times....And did I happen to mention how darling the boys were at J.B.?
